A Dental Checkup What You Should Know

A dental checkup means you’ll have less chance of tooth decay and gum disease.

When you brush twice and floss once each day, use an antibacterial mouthwash and enjoy a healthy diet full of calcium, protein, vitamins, and minerals your smile will thank you for it. I also advise my patients to schedule regular dental checkups with a comprehensive dental exam once a year.

How Often Should I Schedule a Dental Checkup?

For decades, dental practices have advised twice-yearly dental checkups. However, a recent study indicates that checkups can vary from three to 24 months depending on the health of the patient’s mouth. I recommend more frequent dental appointments for diabetics and patients who are prone to gum disease.

What Happens During a Dental Checkup?

During your dental examination, I will closely inspect your teeth and gums looking for any irregularities. If you are having a comprehensive dental examination, I will do an oral cancer screening to check for abnormalities. If anything is detected, I may recommend a biopsy.

During your dental checkup, I may also take x-rays and digital pictures to detect tooth decay or gum disease. If you are suffering from gingivitis a deep professional cleaning may also be done to prevent the more serious periodontal disease.

I will check your old restorations as well to make sure cavities are not lurking in or around your old dental crowns or fillings.

What if Something is Discovered During my Dental Checkup?

If cavities are found, I will fill them. If I’ve discovered decay under your old restorations, I will recommend removal and replacement with more modern dental products.

Over 60 percent of the population has some degree of gum disease. If you were in that percentile, I would recommend root planing and scaling. This procedure helps heal the gums while preventing gum disease from recurring in the future.
