Keep Your Teeth and Gums Healthy During the Holidays

It’s the most wonderful of the year, and that means lots of holiday parties for you and your family to attend. However, it is important that you watch what you put in your mouth as it could have ramifications for your teeth and gums. Probably the last thing that you want to do is spend the majority of Christmas Eve at the ER because you decided to open that specialty brew from your brother in law with your teeth, but it’s more than just bottle caps that can cause problems for your teeth and gums.

Below are a few foods that I recommend skipping over the holidays.

Dried Fruit

Your waistline may be thanking you for tucking into a dried fig or two, but your teeth won’t. That dried fruit plate that your sister sends you every year from sunny Florida could get stuck in the grooves and fissures on your back teeth. Sticky foods can be enjoyed, but try to consume as part of a meal. If you do indulge, rinse with water.

Bubbly Drinks

The champagne may be flowing, but it can erode the enamel on your teeth. If you do like a bit of the bubbly, drink a glass of water in-between libations.

Starchy Foods

Cookies, cakes, pies and candies are everywhere during the holidays, but starchy foods will stay put on your teeth and gums. Rinse with water or brush when you can. At best, skip Aunt Mary’s fruitcake, a double whammy because of the starch and dried fruit.

Fruit Juices

During the holidays you will find more than one punchbowl at any given party, however, if that punch is loaded with fruit juice it could affect your teeth eroding the enamel. As with the bubbly drinks, enjoy water between drinks to help ease the effect of enamel eroding acids.

This holiday season watch what you put in your mouth and don’t forget to schedule an appointment with Centerport Dental in Downtown Portland.
