I tell my patients that kicking the habit is the only way to decrease your risk of the above problems along with other health problems that are related to tobacco. Because nicotine is addictive, quitting is extremely difficult.

Have a support system in place with friends, family members, and co-workers that support your cause. Pick strong people who will help you stick to the plan. Make notes and write down the reasons you want to quit. Keep yourself occupied, chew gum, and get plenty of exercise, because exercising helps curb your addiction to nicotine.

Are Any Tobacco Products Safe?

In a word, no. It’s not just smoking and oral health that you need to be concerned with. Just like cigarettes, cigars and pipes cause oral health problems as well. According to a study in the Journal of the American Dental Association, people who smoke cigars have the same rate of jawbone loss as cigarette smokers.

People who smoke pipes are also in the high-risk category for tooth loss. As a result, people who smoke cigars and pipes have a high risk of throat and oral cancer, even without inhaling. Periodontal disease, stained teeth, and chronic halitosis are also oral consequences that you will have to deal with if you smoke any type of tobacco product.

Chewing Tobacco is Just as Bad

Just like cigarettes, cigars and pipes, chewing tobacco contains over 28 chemicals that can increase your risk of esophageal, throat and oral cancer. Because chewing tobacco has more nicotine, it makes it tougher to quit. If that’s not enough to put the snuff away, maybe the fact that one can of tobacco will give you more nicotine than 60 cigarettes.

Chewing tobacco also contains sugar for flavoring. As you know, sugar causes tooth decay. Smokeless tobacco isn’t good for your gums either is it can cause irritation and tooth recession. Chewing tobacco also contains grit and sand, which will wear down teeth.
