Teeth Whitening Is Too Much Bad for My Smile?

Teeth whitening is the most popular cosmetic dental procedure in the world with people all over the globe striving for the perfect Hollywood Smile. However, and I can say firsthand, some people take whitening too far making their pearly whites see through instead of white.

There are hundreds, perhaps thousands, of tooth whitening products available. You can buy pastes, strips, gels, bleaching trays and mouth rinses over the counter or come to my dental practice for professional teeth whitening. Professional teeth whitening can be done in office or at home.

Why Non Prescription Whitening Products Won’t Work as Well

Because over the counter tooth whitening products don’t require a prescription the paste, gel or strip won’t be as strong as a professional tooth whitening product. All teeth whitening products contain hydrogen peroxide. However, my practice provides patients with a stronger whitening solution to penetrate deep stains and give you whiter teeth.

Why you Shouldn’t Abuse Whitening Products

Gum Damage-I have patients who are never happy with their teeth. This can cause over bleaching. If you are over whitening your teeth you may need root canal therapy as too much bleaching can damage gum tissue.

Tooth Damage- Some patients use so much product that teeth have become unnatural looking, chalky or translucent.

Pain-Patients who use too much tooth whitening product will also suffer from pain and extreme discomfort. Over half of people who whiten their teeth have experienced some sort of sensitivity to food, drink, and even air.

When Teeth Whitening Doesn’t Work

If you follow my Centerport Dental Blog, you will know that teeth whitening will not work on teeth that have been previously restored or teeth with intrinsic or interior staining. Some people will keep bleaching porcelain veneers and cosmetic dental bonding in hopes of a brighter smile, unfortunately that will never happen.

Teeth bleaching isn’t the only solution for a brighter smile. Porcelain veneers, cosmetic dental bonding, and cosmetic dental crowns can eliminate the need for teeth whitening giving you a healthier smile.
